Our History
Aldan Union Church had its beginning in 1914 when a group of women formed a local Sunday School for neighborhood children which met in the basement of Neighbor's Hall located at the corner of Clifton and Woodlawn Avenues. The Sunday School grew quickly and within a few months a preaching service was begun on Sunday evenings.
Encouraged by the growth of the Sunday School and evening service, a group of men were appointed to adopt a constitution and apply for a charter. On July 14, 1915, Aldan Union Church was incorporated and on Easter Sunday of the following year, 50 charter members were received into membership.
As the new church grew, space became a serious problem. In answer to prayer, the Lord provided a recently vacated small chapel on South Woodlawn Avenue, with additional space being rented in the public school.
In 1922, work began on the church building which is now referred to as the chapel. When it was completed in 1923 church membership was 107.
A new Sunday School building was built in 1939, with an addition being added 10 years later. The addition not only expanded the size of the building, it added two additional floors as well.
Our present sanctuary was completed in 1963 at a cost of $500,000. More recently, we opened Providence Park in 2004 providing the community with another recreation area.
In 1919, following World War I, William Allan Dean accepted the call by the members to serve as part-time pastor. Mr. Dean was born in 1897 in Wilkes- Barre, PA. He attended the Hillman Academy, of which his father was principal. In June of 1918, he received his BS in Agriculture from Pennsylvania State College. To prepare himself for possible foreign missionary service, he enrolled in Philadelphia School of the Bible the next fall. It was at this time that he accepted the part-time pastorate of Aldan Union. In addition to his studies at PSOB he also taught English and Chemistry at Pennsylvania Military College now Widener University. After 18 months of ministering on a part-time basis, William Allan Dean was called to be the full-time, pastor of Aldan Union Church, a position that he held until his retirement in December of 1967.
William Allan Dean and Lydia Wright were united in marriage by Dr. Frank Torrey in 1926. They reared their 4 children in the manse adjacent to the church on Providence Road. Mr. Dean attributed much of his success to his wife in providing a comfortable and peaceful home for their family. Mrs. Dean always displayed a sense of friendliness, poise and dignity that endeared her to the congregation.
In addition to shepherding our congregation for almost 50 years, Mr. Dean was a member of the faculty of the Philadelphia College of Bible for 37 years, and a prominent speaker at many Bible Conferences. He served on numerous mission boards where his leadership and judgment were greatly respected. Mr. Dean authored a classic book entitled The Names of God, and was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree from Kings College, Briarcliff Manor, New York.

Our Future Goals
Where do we see ourselves down the road? Wherever the Lord leads us! While the demographics of our area may change, God does not. We will serve Him by reaching out to be salt, light and fragrance to our community as long as our doors are open.
